Kosovo marks 5 December, the International Day of Voluntarism

Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, through the Department of Youth, today marked the International Day of Voluntarism by organising the conference ''Voluntarism in Kosovo'' and other youth activities, supported by Sport Sans Frontiers, LYAC and young volunteers.

Director of Department of Youth has stressed that the aim of this day is to thank volunteers for their efforts in the community and to increase awareness of the public to contribute to society. Voluntarism plays important role in various sectors such as education, youth, culture, sports, environment, health, social care, protection of consumer, humanitarian aid, development policy, research, equal opportunities and foreign relations.

French Ambassador, representatives from Finnish Embassy addressed the attendees with supportive speeches for all Kosovar volunteers by congratulating the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for contribution in motivating the youth to contribute to community through volunteer engagement and commitment of this Ministry for recognition of volunteer work through Administrative Instruction for Volunteer Work in Kosovo.

Precious parts of contribution for this conference were given by international organisations with their mission in Kosovo, Balkan Sunflowers, The Ideas Partnership and Austrian Development Cooperation. International Voluntarism Day was determined by the Assembly of United Nations in 1985. The aim of this day is to thank volunteers for their efforts in community and to raise awareness of the public to contribute to society. This day is celebrated in many countries of the world by different nongovernmental organisations, Red Cross etc., and is supported by volunteers of United Nations.

Labinot Berisha, a connoisseur of volunteer work on Kosovo, presented the reasons which make you become a volunteer, and why people volunteer, emphasising the following reasons: To help the others, To contribute for a cause and to improve the life of the others, voluntarism offers a possibility to learn, and engagement in volunteer work may offer people new skills and responsibilities, thus increasing their opportunity for employment.
