On the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the IPM in Prizren begins the restoration of the house of Muhamed Shukriu

14.08.2017

The Regional Center for Cultural Heritage in Prizren has started implementing the project for the restoration of the Shukriu family home in Prizren. This investment by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, which is being implemented through the Regional Center for Cultural Heritage in Prizren, comes as part of the implementation of projects for the consolidation, restoration and conservation interventions for endangered cultural heritage sites and also on the occasion of marking the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of this institution and in respect of the work and creativity of one of the personalities who left unresolved traces in the field of preservation and protection of the Cultural Heritage in the Region of Prizrenand also one of the founders of cultural heritage institutions.

The house of Shukriu family is located in the Historic Center of Prizren, near the Gazi Mehmet Pasha Complex. This residential house has historical values as a traditional civic residence, but it is special due to the fact that there resided the deceased Muhamed Shukriu, who was the founder of the Institution for the Protection of Monuments in Prizren.

The house was built in the first part of the XIX century, and was renovated in the XX century by the owners. The house has a rectangular planimetry. Access to the home is realized by the alley where the first setting is the part of the enclosed jetty in the form of a passage where it passes to the yard behind it. In the ground floor there are two rooms, one of which has been turned into a garage. On the ground floor, there are four alcoves and a locked garret. In the rooms are elements like wood carving, shelves, storage spaces, ceilings, decorative travertine etc.

The condition of the building was poor due to the fact that there was no long-term intervention and maintenance, especially the roof, as well as the demolition of the other half of the building over 30 years ago, had contributed to the weakening of the whole building's overall stability and in particular the roof which is before the collapse. Even the tiles and waved etched plaques are largely depleted and no longer have the capability of water impermeability. The construction of the entire apartment is made of wood and dirt that is not resistant to moisture, therefore it was urgent to intervene in preventing the penetration of moisture from the roof.

The implementation of this project shows the commitment of the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo to those who committed themselves to the preservation and protection of our cultural heritage. It is also important, among other things, to prevent the destruction of a residential flat with a yard, and which in the city of Prizren are scarce.
